Biomass burning, low energy filter on Samsoe

As mentioned on the web site covering COP15 Copenhagen (the climate conference) Denmarks engagement in the international climate challenge also includes the danish island Samsoe, which in 1997 was appointed to “Renewable Engergy Island”.

The target for this island project was to introduce 100 % renewable engergi on the island within 10 years. As for the heating system the target was that 60% of the overall district heating on the island should be delivered from centralized heating plants driven by biomass burning.

In 2003 Teldust A/S delivered a large filter system to Tranebjerg Heating Plant on the island. This heating plant is equipped with a straw-fired boiler being feed with entire half-ton bales of straw.

The heating plant was established in 1993 and was the first heating plant on the island. 263 private residences, businesses, housing associations and institutions are connected to this district heating system. The fire-boiler in the plant has a capacity of 3 MW and the overall consumption of heat is approx. 9.500 MWh per year.

For filtration of the discharged air Teldust supplied a special filter, type Green Line. The filter area is 380m2 covered by 256 pieces of Teltemp filter bags, which are suited for filtration of flue gas.

The filter is a special low-energy filter, adapted to the newest principles in order to achieve energy savings as an integrated part of the filtration process. This means that the heating plant’s need for energy is less than with older filtration principles. The end result is a saving of approx. DKK 100.000 per year on the energy costs.
